Middle/High School Renovation

Project overview
The reconstruction of the Schalmont High School and Middle School campus modernized aging infrastructure and improved the functionality of key student and administrative spaces while maintaining continuous school operations. The project represented a major capital investment by the district to upgrade core building systems, improve energy performance, and modernize learning environments across the campus. Work included interior renovations throughout both schools, expansion of the high school cafeteria, relocation of the District Offices into the high school building, and replacement of outdated building systems serving the campus.
Sage Engineering Associates, LLP provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering services for the project. The design replaced the original oil-fired steam heating system with a modern natural gas-fired hot water heating plant located in a boiler room addition at the high school. The upgraded system improved energy efficiency and reliability while providing code-compliant ventilation and heating for classrooms and other student-occupied spaces.
Electrical improvements included replacement of outdated lighting systems with energy-efficient recessed lighting and lighting controls, upgrades to site lighting serving both schools, and infrastructure supporting smart classroom technology and data systems. Fire alarm improvements and emergency lighting upgrades were incorporated to maintain code compliance and enhance life safety throughout the buildings.
Additional renovations included reconstruction of toilet rooms to provide ADA-compliant facilities, modernization of interior finishes, and improvements to the main lobby and cafeteria spaces. Exterior upgrades included replacement of original steel windows with high-performance aluminum window systems, replacement of deteriorated fascia panels, and installation of a replacement EPDM roof system with tapered insulation to improve drainage and thermal performance. Site improvements included sidewalk replacement, bus loop reconstruction, and circulation upgrades to improve safety and traffic flow.
Engineering the human environment.
